WE
WANT TO WELCOME OUR NEW TRUSTEE
Baumberger Endowment appointed Ms.
CURRENT
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CYNTHIA A. GUYON
TO
RETIRE EFFECTIVE DECEMBER 31, 2009
The Executive Director of the
Baumberger Endowment, Cynthia A. Guyon, will be retiring on December 31,
2009. Mrs. Guyon has served the
Endowment for the past 28 years. She
began with the title of secretary in March 1981; being promoted to Director in
January 1989; and ultimately Executive Director in December 1999.
During her tenure, Cynthia
Guyon has reviewed, counseled, and congratulated 2,875 Baumberger Scholars who
have received over $36 million in scholarship aid from the Baumberger
Endowment. A job well done Ms. Guyon…a
job well done.
Renewal applications for 2010-11 will be sent in February 2010 to Scholars (1) making satisfactory progress under the "Conditions of Agreement” and (2) who have remaining eligibility under the Baumberger Scholarship program. The Endowment will continue to use its own Financial Information Form (FIF) which will be sent with the Renewal Application in February. Both forms will be due on March 15, 2010.
§
Scholars with continuing eligibility can look
forward to their Spring Semester 2010 stipends arriving at universities in
January. Due to the time constraints between semesters, students may need to
consider taking out an emergency loan for the Spring semester until Baumberger
funds get to the University.
§ Scholars planning mid-academic year transfers should advise the Baumberger staff by December 1 of acceptance by another eligible institution, or face delay in Spring checks.
§ Proper notification should be made now if you have received additional awards or made other changes in your financial aid packages.
§ If you will be graduated or otherwise leaving the Baumberger program after the Fall 2009, please notify the Endowment in writing of your degree, career plans, etc.
Several students have inquired about study abroad programs. If you are contemplating studying abroad, you MUST discuss this with the Director before participating or risk losing your scholarship.
HANG IN THERE!
If you are one of 23 students on various Baumberger probations during the Fall 2009, your scholastic record will be evaluated by staff upon receipt of the special grade report certified by you. (We have requested official transcripts, but often these grade reports are received in mid-January, or later.) Students will be notified of status. Keep your head up and keep truckin’!
All students should strive to pass at least the minimum credit hours and meet minimum grade expectations. (Please refer to “Conditions” Items 1 and 2 in your file copy of the 2009-10 Agreement.) If you do not complete at least 12 undergraduate hours this fall, advice is to make-up credit during the next spring semester. Summer school attendance (2009 or 2010) will not be considered in evaluations of progress for the 9-months academic year 2009-10. Also, the selection and review committee does not consider your credits by advance placement or exam in evaluating progress.
KEEP IN TOUCH
The Baumberger Endowment is interested in keeping in touch with previous Baumberger Scholars so as you complete your time with us please inform us of your physical address or your e-mail address so we can communicate with you in the future. If you know any Baumberger Alumni, please ask them to send us an e-mail at baumendow@sbcglobal.net to let us know how they are doing and to update us on their accomplishments.
Ä
You are one of 234 Baumberger Scholars who
received stipends aggregating $527,748 to attend 19 institutions in
Ä UT-Austin was first choice with 90 students; Texas A&M was second with 52; UT-San Antonio attracted 37; Trinity garnered 15; the remainder are scattered over the State in clusters of eight down to single entries. But, wherever you are, you would make “Uncle” Baumberger proud!
Ä “Welcome Aboard” to the 55 new Scholars who accepted the Baumberger Scholarship this Fall. Of the 55 selected, 28 are female and 27 are male; graduates of 24 high schools; and have SAT scores ranging from 1000 to 1530 with a mean score of 1202.
Ä Congratulations are due the 35 Baumberger Scholars who received bachelor degrees in May/August 2009. At the September meeting Baumberger Trustees took special note that many students graduated with honors and the degree fields were broadly represented. Fifteen other Scholars left the program after completing their eight semesters with Baumberger.
Ä The Baumberger Endowment has never sought donations from its scholars, believing that it is tough enough for a student to survive financially--while devoting major time to academics--in colleges and universities. After graduation, it takes even more time to settle into a job or pursue graduate degrees and get one’s head above water.
A few students over the years have inquired as to the possibility of “giving something back” to the Endowment to be spread among new scholars as they embark on the trail you have blazed. If you make it big, you might want to remember how “Uncle Baumberger” helped you and make a donation to keep the funding going…
Ä Now comes a sour note: Unfortunately, one student was severed from the scholarship program after evaluation of scholastic records for 2009-10 in terms of Baumberger’s minimum achievement standards. The fortunate news is that scholars are striving to make good grades to keep their scholarship during these tough economic times.
Ä We would like to express our sympathy and support to all Scholars who have experienced loss of loved ones or faced personal hardships during the past year.
Ä Trustees and staff wish you meaningful holidays in keeping with the seasons ahead.
